About us

Who are we?

KEMJg1Fa.

Barcelona-Enabled was set up to offer a service for mobility impaired travellers that visit Barcelona. We realised there is a lack of information and personal attention for disabled travellers to find hotels, restaurants, transfers and activities that are accessible to them. Barcelona-Enabled will help by making reservations at places that are checked and approved in order for you to enjoy your holiday  to the full.

Mirjam Stibbe worked for several years in the tourism industry where she realised she couldn’t offer a solution to her clients that asked for wheelchair adapted accommodation and services. This became even clearer when a family member in a wheelchair came to visit. The detailed information she looked for in order to book suitable accommodation was not at hand. This is when Mirjam decided to start Barcelona-Enabled, to make sure the information has been checked and approved for the adaptation that is required. The personal touch in the way we work is indispensable and will give you added value to your experience.

How we work:

Every traveller is different with different needs, especially if you are a wheelchair user and when you are in need of accessible services. We offer personal advice so your Barcelona trip will be completely careless.

  • We check availability and prices for adapted accommodation according to your needs and wishes. We propose the best options and make a reservation for you. We work on commission base with accommodation so you will be guaranteed the best price and no extra cost for our services. I´m sure you want to have the best deal.
  • No solution, no cost. If we can´t help you, won´t charge you. By the way, we try to keep prices as reasonable as possible. No hidden fees, no surprises. Transparency and honesty is important to us.
  • Let us arrange your airport transfers. An adapted vehicle is waiting for you when you arrive and we are in direct contact with the driver, so you don´t have to worry about not speaking the language. You can speak to us.
  • We can be your partner in organising your trip. Many of our clients are travel agencies or events companies that need a local agent to advise on accessibility. We´re here to help you and share our knowledge to make your visit a success.
  • Our guides are trained in accessibility and know how best to get around in a wheelchair in Barcelona. More importantly, they´re the best guides in town!!!
  • There´s a wide variety of mobility equipment available for rent, i.e. wheelchair, commode, hoist etc. We will make sure it´s already delivered when you arrive and you can start exploring the city.

Frequently Asked Questions:

.

Is the Sagrada Familia accessible for wheelchairs?

The interior of the Sagrada Familia is well adapted for wheelchair users. However you have to take into account that it´s still a work in progress and wheelchair accessible ramps might change because of building. The lifts that go up into the towers are not accessible by wheelchair.

Is Park Guëll accessible for wheelchairs?

Even though the Parc Guëll has published a map with a wheelchair accessible route, the park is a challenge for wheelchair users. To get to the parc it´s highly recommendable to use a taxi because it´s built on a steep hill. The parc as well is not flat and the route that´s proposed goes in loops. Not all the paths are paved and are not advisable in an electric wheelchair. Take note of the obstacles and enjoy it if you´re up for the challenge!

Is Camp Nou accessible wheelchairs?

The stadium of one of the world’s best football club is only partially accessible for wheelchair users. The interactive section, the museum and a spectacular view from inside the stadium are easily accessible. Unfortunately the locker rooms, pitch level and press room (Camp Nou calls this ´the experience´) are only reachable by stairs.

Where is the best place to stay in the city?

Even though many visitors want to get accommodation close to the ´centre´ or close to ´Las Ramblas´ I recommend you set this notion aside. The main areas of Barcelona are the Eixample (in English this means expansion) or the old neighbourhood. The old neighbourhood is characterised by its narrow streets around Las Ramblas. In summer  tourists crowd around this area and both day and night it can be quite noisy and smelly.

The Eixample area is big and stretches from one side of Barcelona to the other side. The central street is Paseo de Gracia where you will also find the Gaudi houses. But the Sagrada Familia, beach and Camp Nou are all spread out over the city.

I recommend you to stay close to public transport and don´t go for cheap of popular accommodation because there´re better deals out there.

Dag Mirjam,
Vriendelijke groet,

since Sunday we are back from Barcelona. Our stay in MICs Sant Jordi was very nice. The adapted apartment was really good furnished for wheelchair drivers, we had everything we needed and could enjoy our days there. Even the big loud street in front was not that great problem we thought, we we arrived and we could sleep at all. Barcelona is a wonderful city and we have seen the most big attractions and with our son we often had to pay much less than normal tourists. The people were friendly and helpful to handicaped people and the roads were good the push a wheelchair. I want to thank you for your friendly help.
With regards
Claudia, Germany

We had a great journey. The staff was very courteous and helpful. We felt
very comfortable there. The hotel was absolutly perfect for us. We were
suprised about the accessibility in Barcelona and we could also use the
metro. I felt really safe and the citiziens were very friendly and helpful.
We could imagine to travel to Barcelona and Mics Sant Jordi again. And we
will do it.

Gaby

Many thanks for your help. It was so much easier to book the journey with you, than to do it be my own. Last year we spent hours by hours in searching an accomodation.
Kind regards
Gaby

We had a nice time. The wheelchair made a lot of mileage! We have used it from morning till night and my husband went everywhere with us except to Park Güell. He stayed in the wonderful hotel so he could rest. We have often used the metro and it went very smoothly using the elevators. The people are also often very sweet and spontaneously offered their help. We really liked Barcelona. We are now tired but it was definitely worth visiting Barcelona with a the wheelchair

I’ve just returned from 5 nights at the MIC Sant Jordi. The accommodation is the best ever. Excellent access to the Metro and buses in front of the hotel. I will return. On site carers was a bonus, and a very nice restaurant.

Many thanks for the professional help, especially on short notice. I stayed for several days at the Mic Sant Jordi. It is well adapted for wheelchairs and easy to get around with the metro in front of the hotel.

My husband, 25-year old daughter and I just returned from a fabulous 8-day trip exploring Barcelona and environs hosted by Mirjam Stibbe and Barcelona Enabled. It was the trip of a lifetime! Mirjam totally understood and met our needs–I am a wheelchair-user–while at the same time being constantly engaging and informative as she toured us around the city and to towns outside of it. Her knowledge of the history, culture, politics, and everything about the area, and the way for us to best explore it, was impeccable. We cannot thank her enough!

I just wanted to thank you again for your part in making our stay in Barcelona an enjoyable experience. Please pass on to Asad our gratitude also for having such a wonderful carer/nurse in Maria, who was everything we could hope for as a supportive helper. She was a fast-learner, willing and very competent, friendly, and of course always reliable. When we return we will certainly be in touch with you again. Thanks for restoring our faith.

I wanted to (and also on behalf of my mother) thank for the fast and efficient delivery of a wheelchair in the last weekend of April. I’m not exaggerating when I say that this has saved our family weekend . Now my mother remained free from pain and we have seen a lot of of Barcelona together. Both the delivery and retrieval of the wheelchair iwent smoothly . Really great! Thanks for your mediation.

It was wonderful in Barcelona , we had a nice holiday and everything was accessible well with my scooter ( bus, metro and tram) also staying in MIC Sant Jordi was a pleasant experience.

We much enjoyed our visit. The accommodation at MIC’s Sant Jordi was excellent. Very suitable for our needs. Most suitable location. We enjoyed the restaurant. The staff were very friendly and helpful – the translation apps on their tablets made up for our limited Spanish! Unfortunately the type of commode/shower chair requested by Angela was not available. The Director apologised and explained. Overall entirely satisfied and we hope to visit again.
Transfers very smooth. Efforts to assist the disabled were impressive in the city – La Pedrera for example.

I would like to thank you for everything you have arranged for our trip to Barcelona . We really enjoyed our stay! The hotel was absolutely beautiful. The facilities were good, the breakfast delicious and location fantastic . Really nice to have everything within walking distance.
Furthermore, the trapezium was properly installed and the service was fine. The taxi that took us to and from the airport to the hotel was also good. Friendly man who drove very careful not too much back and forth shake me. In short, it was a very successful weekend. I was again so inspired by Spain , that I am seriously thinking about spending the summer with my husband and son on the Spanish coast.

We had nice days in Barcelona. The hotel was very good . And the adapted room , shower and toilet as well. Public transport ( bus and metro) was also well organized in Barcelona with a wheelchair, better than the Netherlands

My first visit to Barcelona was not a big success. This time I used the services of Barcelona-Enabled. We were picked up from the airport with a wheelchair adapted taxi and started my stay already more relaxed than previous ones. The program and hotel that I booked were all completely satisfactory. The next time I come to Barcelona I will definitely book with Barcelona-Enabled again. It saved me a lot of stress.

Joost

Joost has enjoyed the holiday immensely. The guide of you deserves a big compliment. She has really made a huge effort. And…watching football on the beach and in a bar.

Eetu
Finland

My trip is now over and I have come back to Finland and rested a while 🙂 Trip was great and all went fine! Thank you very much about transfer organizing! I mess up little when we come to Barcelona and we miss retrievers but it wasn’t big deal. Guys from bus company was great and helped us much.
The hotel you recommended is very good for wheelchair users. Room is big enough and especially bathroom is great. Corridors and roof terrace are also accessible.
Only bad thing about hotel is poor soundproofing in window. Luckily window is to side street so there is not so much noise. But still its problem. Window itself looks fine but obviously weather strips are bad.
